“How so affluent a suburb went so long without a brilliant neighbourhood joint I can’t explain, but it certainly has one now.” Thus Matthew Norman, a restaurant critic at the Guardian, in a recent review of La Buvette, Richmond. So Richmond’s very long period without a first-class restaurant (see my review of A Cena on [...]

A Cena

We never go out for dinner on Valentine’s Day.   After a run of bad experiences (overbooking, price ramping, shoddy food, couldn’t-care-less service etc) Mr and Mrs Riversniffer vowed some years ago never again to dine out on that day.   But when Mrs R said in January she’d booked A Cena, [...]

Dipsophile should first declare an interest. He has known the current landlord of the Phoenix for over thirty years. Last year, when the pub was refurbished, Dipsophile helped to document the project in photographs.   After extensive building work the pub reopened in March 2008. Since then we’ve been for the odd drink, but [...]

The Seesh Mahal has been one of Twickenham’s best curry houses since the 1980’s.   To quote from the toptable restaurant review site:    “This cosmopolitan Bangladeshi restaurant on Twickenham’s London Road is renowned for its sleek styling and fresh, authentic food. The dining room at the Sheesh Mahal – with [...]

For years Ches’s Café in Crown Road has been reliably dishing up early morning bacon sandwiches and fry-ups.   But recently the focus has changed. It’s still a very good place for an English breakfast, but it has recently adopted a different guise at lunchtime and evenings – Ches’s Trattoria.   Wikipedia [...]

This Persian restaurant at the end of Heath Road is a little-known gem.   Mr and Mrs Riversniffers were tipped off by people who’d already been. So we turned up one Sunday lunchtime.   From the outside, BiBi looks like a café; the external appearance, taken with the constant traffic and [...]

The White Swan – Richmond

Dipsophile has been drinking in this pub for more than thirty years. Not continuously, you understand (Oliver Reed-like figure lurches briefly across the reader’s mind), but on and off since John Foster was the landlord in the Seventies.   To read the press today you’d think binge drinking was a modern invention. [...]
